Whether your heading to the lake to wake board with friends or to pull your kids around on the tubes, we can all agree we do it because its fun. But a fun day on the water can turn into a serious situation faster than you think. Now that summer is in full swing and the launches are packed on every hot day there is, you will need to keep safety on your mind even more now. Here are a few tips to follow that will not only keep you and your passengers safe but the other fellow boaters around you as well.
With all the lakes, great lakes, and rivers that surround us it's hard to keep up with the summer events going on for boating and fishing. Although some events and tournaments have passed there are still plenty of events for staying on, or close to, the water coming up. It doesn't matter what your interests are--fishing, sailing, racing, antiques--there are all different types of events this summer.
Blue Water Fest - Port Huron - Jul 16th-18th
Taking place this July in Port Huron, the Blue Water Fest is a weekend long event taking place during Port Huron's traditional "Boat Week". The festival has a variety of events, including a rotary parade, a boat race, and a boat night. The city of Port Huron hosts this event as a way to give back to the community.
Brown Trout Festival - Alpena - July 17th-26th
It's the 41st year of the Brown Trout Festival, a festival full of tournaments and fun for the whole family. The festival takes place in Alpena, Michigan and has fun activities for all ages. There are different fishing tournaments all week, including the first Bass tournament. From Friday until the following Sunday, there are activies for teens, a tournament for kids, and plenty of tournaments for adults (with cash prizes). Mark your calander, catch some fish, and (hopefully) get paid to enjoy a day on the water with family and friends.
Little Traverse Bay Regatta - Harbor Springs - July 23rd-26th
Sailboats from all over the country meet in Harbor Springs every year for the annual regatta hosted by the Little Traverse Yacht Club. While not everyone hops on a sail boat to join the race, this event is still a lot of fun for the public. Besides watching the races, the public is welcome to join the pancake breakfast on Saturday and Sunday morning. It's a beautiful place to watch up to 85 sailboats compete; viewers typically watch from the water in their power boats or on land at Petoskey State Park and Petoskey Sunset Park.
St Clair Classic Offshore Riverboat Race - St Clair - July 24th-26th
The race is part of the St Clair Riverfest, a festival with music, activities, games, and entertainment all along the St Clair River. Different races take place all as a part of the Great Lakes Silver Cup. All different power boats race along the river, competing for the winner title in their class. Racing goes on all day on July 25th.
Antique/Vintage Outboard Motor Show - Detroit - Augst 1st
At the Dossin Lakes Museum on August 1st, the Great Lakes Chapter will be hosting their "Michigan Made" themed outboard show for antique and vintage boat motors. There will be commemerative awards along witha free sell-swap-trade section for all the fellow classic motor enthusiasts looking for those hard to find parts. This event is the first of its kind for the Great Lakes chapter of the Antique Outboard Motor Club.
36th Annual MI City In-Water Boat Show - Michigan City - August 9th
The Michigan City boat show has grown over the years, with it starting in 1980, and has a lot for people to come out and see. Along with the obvious showing of boats, the event has seminars geared towards boating, showing of new gadgets including the mercury joystick boat manuevering and USPS's new virtual boat skills trainer, and a Flyboarding demonstration. Mastercraft Throwndown - Grand Rapids - August 8th
Not a fisher, sailor,or racer? Maybe the mastercraft throwdown is the event you're looking for. On August 8th, X-Games will be hosting the Mastercraft Throwdown in Grand Rapids at Millenium park. This event is packed with wakeboarding competitions, featuring only the best, and live music. A collaboration between XGames and ESPN, the MasterCraft Throwdown will showcase amazing athletes and "the future of watersports."
Boating & Outdoor Fest- Lake St Clair - September 17th-20th
End of summer blues are a real thing. The Boating and Outdoor Festival in Lake St Clair is a great event to help you forget that summer is a thing of the past. Filled with boat demonstrations, live music at the tiki bar, and the 3rd annual Cruising Post party. The Cruising Post party gets all sailors and power boat enthusiasts together for food, music, and nautical gift giveaways.
